Welcoming Cernunnos
For the Autumn Equinox this year we welcome Cernunnos, a Gaulish god shown with the antlers of a stag. His name is known from a single carving on the Pillar of the Boatmen, a monument raised in Paris in the first century by the boatmen of the Parisii, where an antlered head appears with torcs hanging from the antlers. The name is usually taken to mean "the horned one," though scholars debate it. No myths about him survive, so much of what is said about him today comes from images, like the antlered figure on the Gundestrup Cauldron who sits cross-legged holding a torc and a serpent, surrounded by animals. From these he is generally understood as a god of animals, wild places, and abundance.
